Lesson Policies

A few practical guidelines help keep lessons running smoothly and respectfully for everyone.

Scheduling & Cancellations

Lessons are scheduled weekly at a regular time and purchased in sets of lesson credits.

At least 24 hours' notice is required to cancel a lesson and retain the lesson credit.
Same-day cancellations may be credited in cases of illness or emergency.
Properly cancelled lessons are credited toward future lessons.
Missed lessons and same-day cancellations for other reasons are charged as usual.
Lesson credits are valid for one year from the date of purchase.

If a lesson must be cancelled by the instructor, the cancelled lesson will be credited toward a future lesson.

Payment

Lessons are paid for in advance, in sets of four or twelve lesson credits.

Payment is accepted by e-transfer, cheque, cash, or PayPal. Lesson credits are non-refundable.

Studio Expectations

Please be ready to start your lesson on time and bring any books and materials needed for your lesson. There is no need to bring a harp to an in-studio lesson, unless you would like to.

Please wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them completely before playing the harp. Fingernails should be kept short to support proper technique and care of the instrument.

Parents are encouraged to quietly observe and take notes during lessons for younger students. For older students, observation is welcome with the student's permission.

Vancouver Harp Academy is a supportive learning environment where students are encouraged to work toward their own musical goals. Students are encouraged to measure their progress against their own abilities and goals, rather than against one another.

Practice & Instruments

Regular practice between lessons is an important part of learning the harp. Students are expected to practise between lessons and to make a consistent effort to apply what is covered in their lessons.

After the beginner trial period, students are expected to have regular access to a harp at home for practice. Guidance is available for choosing or renting a suitable instrument, with beginner harp rentals often available for under $100 per month.

For younger students especially, parental support makes a significant difference. Establishing a regular daily practice time and offering gentle encouragement can help students practise consistently and make steady progress.

Illness

If you or your child are feeling at all unwell, please stay home. This helps protect students, families, and the instructor from passing illnesses through the studio.

In-person lessons can often be moved online when appropriate. Please let the studio know as soon as possible if you are sick; same-day lesson credits may be retained in cases of illness or emergency.

Photos, Recording, & Social Media

Vancouver Harp Academy does not maintain any social media accounts. Photos and videos from studio performances may occasionally be shared directly with families, but the studio does not use them for social-media content.

Materials & Communication

Beginner music books and essential learning materials are provided. Additional repertoire or supplies will be recommended as students progress.

Questions between lessons are welcome. Emails and messages are generally answered within 1–3 business days.
